Teacher Kristin Pitzen of Orange Countyâs Newport Mesa School District said why she took down the American flag from her classroom in a TikTok video that she later removed: âbecause it made me uncomfortable.â
âI packed it away and I donât know where, and I havenât found it yet,â she muttered into the camera, her laughter washing over her words.
She continued by saying that she tells her students to âStand if you feel like it, donât stand if you feel like it, say the words if you want, you donât have to say the words,â during the morning reading of the Pledge of Allegiance, which is a symbol of national patriotism.
But that became an issue since the teacherâs classroom did not have a US flag, which she removed during the pandemic because it made her âfeel uncomfortable,â Pitzen whispered on the clip.
Pitzen continued. âBut my kid today goes, âHey, um, itâs kinda weird that we just stand and then, you know, we say it to nothing.â And Iâm like, âOh well, you know, I gotta find it, like, Iâm working on it, I got you.ââ
